Animal linguistics: Exploring referentiality and compositionality in bird calls

چکیده

Establishing the theory of language evolution is an ongoing challenge in science. One profitable approach this regard to seek origins linguistic capabilities by comparing with vocal communication systems closely related relatives (i.e., great apes). However, several key appear be absent non-human primates, which limits range studies, such as direct phylogenetic comparison. A further informative lies identifying convergent features phylogenetically distant animals and conducting comparative studies. This particularly useful respect establishing general rules for capabilities. In article, I review recent findings on a passerine bird species, Japanese tit (Parus minor). Field experiments have revealed that tits produce unique alarm calls when encountering predatory snakes, serve enhance visual attention call receivers snake-like objects. Moreover, often combine discrete types meaningful into fixed-ordered sequences according ordering rule, conveying compositional message receivers. These indicate two core language, namely, referentiality compositionality, independently evolved avian lineage. describe how these can examined under field conditions discuss research may contribute exploring language.

Agnosia for bird calls

The cognitive organisation of nonverbal auditory knowledge remains poorly defined. Deficits of environmental sound as well as word and visual object knowledge are well-recognised in semantic dementia. However, it is unclear how auditory cognition breaks down in this disorder and how this relates to deficits in other knowledge modalities. We had the opportunity to study a patient with a typical ...

Computer Synthesis of Bird Songs and Calls

Bird songs are fascinating acoustic phenomena. In this paper, we first examine the acoustic mechanisms of sound production in birds and contrast them with their anatomy. Next, we describe the simulation of a one-mass source together with a simple transmission line model for a psittacine bird. In concluding, we discuss future areas for research.

Exploring phrase-compositionality in skip-gram models

In this paper, we introduce a variation of the skip-gram model which jointly learns distributed word vector representations and their way of composing to form phrase embeddings. In particular, we propose a learning procedure that incorporates a phrasecompositionality function which can capture how we want to compose phrases vectors from their component word vectors. Our experiments show improve...
